The question
How does Jesusโ definition of peace differ from our cultureโs understanding of it?
The answer
Short answer: Spiritual over sense.
Long answer:
Jesus’ definition of peace has to do with our relationship to Him. As believers, we know that peace is found and comes from Him. It’s not something found out in the world.
Unbelievers have a sense of peace that’s founded upon their understanding and security in something of the world.
I see the world’s peace in this sense as temporary and His peace as eternal.
Our true security and peace will always be driven by our proximity to the One who created us. He knows our needs and carries us through all of our trials.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way.
2 Thessalonians 3:16
How would you describe the difference?

Such great points, Summer. The world has peace only when there is no storm. But Jesus brings us peace, even in the midst of the storm, because we know He is in control and we can trust Him. ๐๐ป
