Why Are You Putting Your Brakes On?

Sometimes when I’m on the highway, there’s a curve and people have their brakes on going around said curve. I literally say in the car, why are you putting your brakes on? With a curve coming up, driving, you can see it coming. Putting your brakes on signals a stop or reduced speed coming for those behind. Alternatively, just take your foot off the gas. We one footers don’t take the foot off the gas to put the brakes on. We just take the pressure off the gas to slow down enough, if we need to. Again, we’re on the highway. Please, for everyone’s sake, do not stop on a highway. 😭

Anywhooooo….

This happened the other day and maybe because I’d just been at church an hour before, or I was feeling philosophical, but it got me thinking about our lives. Just living.

I feel like I put the brakes on everything. Every decision – I dunno, is that right? Is this what God has for me? I don’t know if I’m ready. I don’t need it. What if I’m rejected? I don’t know what I’m doing. Is it a good time? I’ll just wait 6 more months – which turns into 2 years… etc.

I just yearn to take a risk and go full throttle, but I’m overly cautious and hesitant for a few reasons – mainly just not wanting to fail.

Some things in life we shouldn’t put the brakes on. Like obedience to what He explicitly calls us to in His Word. If we’re pumping the brakes on being in community, sharing His Word, encouraging one another and a whole list of other things that we can glean from His Mighty Word, we’re not only missing out what He has for us, but we’re not doing what He has for us to begin with.

Other things, maybe we just need to remember that saying no risk, no reward.

If you don’t put yourself out there or take the chance, and maybe even fail, you’re not going to get the reward that could come with it down the road. Even in failure we see growth and endurance. Failure isn’t the end, but the start of a new beginning.

Asking ourselves why we’re putting the brakes on is important. If we’re braking because we feel God nudging us that it’s a bad decision or we need to go a different direction, that’s okay, obviously. But if that brake check is because of our own fears? Maybe hand that over to God and seek Him in that – is this act an act of obedience and glorifying God? If so, why am I hesitant? It could mean you’re lacking in confidence that God will see you through that big life thing or decision.

Life is hard but it’s even harder without God.

I don’t have it all figured out here, folks. This is a big thing I struggle with so I guess I’m preaching to myself.

So this was a bit of a ramble, but I hope you were encouraged anyway.

Have a great Wednesday!
