This week, I’m reading up on the “communicable” attributes of God in Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem. These are attributes that we share more of in common than other attributes of God. Though not fully translated to us who God created, we do share these things with Him in smaller portions, more so than like omnipresence, for example. The other attributes are simply “incommunicable.” The communicable attributes are so vast that he’s separated them out into two whole chapters, so I’ve actually only gotten into the first chapter!
Within this chapter, Grudem has separated all these out into different sections. In the section on invisibility, he writes:
[T]here is the fact that we do not see God today with our physical eyes. We may perhaps wonder why God has decided to remain invisible to us in this age, but we should realize at least two benefits (1) God’s invisibility means that God himself decides to whom he will reveal himself. “No one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” (Matt. 11:27). (2) God’s invisibility means that we must daily, intentionally seek after fellowship with him and not take it for granted: “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jer. 29:13).
There were so many things in this chapter that were powerful in just highlighting who God is and pointing directly into Scripture all the ways He explicitly shows us these attributes. This stopped me for a bit and I just kind of meditated on the fact that God reveals Himself and that when we seek after Him, we will find Him. It’s a choice, though.
So many times before and probably so many times in the future, I have and will ask “Where are you, God?” but He’s right here with me. He’s right there with you. Have you sought Him? Have you picked up His Word?
When Grudem said that we must daily, intentionally seek after fellowship with him and not take it for granted, wow. Yeah, I’m not the greatest at the consistency of intentionally fellowshipping with Him and I probably do take those times for granted.
God reveals Himself in so many ways. It’s through Scripture for us to pick up and dig into. What if you don’t have His physical Word handy? We have prayer – this powerful gift He gave us; direct communication with God! What else? He reveals Himself through creation! We are surrounded by His handiwork. We don’t lack for things to point us to Him, but our seeking is what’s lacking.
So often we are reminded of the wind and how like God it is. We don’t see it, but we know it’s there. Why? Because everything it touches, we see how it moves or changes. God moves. Are we looking?
I hope you have a great Monday and week!

This is so good! And such a great reminder to intentionally seek Him, every day. Thank you for sharing this, Summer. I hope you have a good week. โฅ๏ธ
