This past weekend was the home opener for the Tulsa Oilers who faced off against conference rival Cincinnati Cyclones. As usual, it was a roller coaster of emotions.
Back on the 13th and 14th of October, the Oilers kicked butt during some preseason games against the Allen Americans, winning both matchups. Robidoux, who plays for the Americans, was back to his usual antics. He was instigating the whole time he was on the ice – pushing people and getting in their faces – until he got a bloody nose and didn’t return to the ice.
The following week, they were on the road in Utah for back-to-back meetings against the Grizzlies that left us bringing home a couple of L’s.
These losses in Utah were a shocker when we played so well in preseason games. Not that they were perfect, but wins are wins here.
More recently, Cincy came to the BOK Center for their second trip ever to Tulsa. Last year they came and it was just as interesting. They are a tough (and rough) team.
At one point, the Oilers had a one goal lead. What happened afterward? Cincy… had 5 goals up their sleeve. 5! The game Saturday ended up being 7-4 in favor of the Cyclones. At least we didn’t have far to travel with the L.
It being the first home game, we did have a decent crowd of just over 15,000 in attendance.
Sunday was a slightly different story. With some line changes and preparation of what to expect out of the opponent, the Oilers went out swinging. Or maybe it was just Michael Farren! He was on fire and scored 3 goals that went unanswered until the third period scoring himself a little hat trick so early in the season!
A few memorable moments occurred like fights and the obvious tension of the game. At one point, Tyler Poulsen looked injured, favoring one leg. He skated it off a bit after BEING PUSHED DOWN BY A CYCLONE – the audience did not like that, for obvious reasons – and then shortly after, he went off and high-sticked the guy. Whether intentional or not (I’m sure it was…), it was never called a penalty and really, I think it all worked out. Right? 🙂
Oilers came out on top with a 4-3 final score. At the end of the game, before Cincy went back home, a fight was expected and that’s exactly what happened. One of their players received a 4min double minor for roughing and a 10min misconduct penalty to tally on the stats.
This morning I’ll be heading to another game where the Oilers face off against the Americans we whooped in preseason. Yes, this morning! I’m excited to be off work and enjoying a game while my fellow coworkers keep the company running and attend meetings. I don’t much enjoy screaming children, but sacrifices must be made.
Thanks for stopping by and reading!
