Get Sashed with Authority

I’ve started studying Revelation – something I’ve wanted to do for a whiiiiile. I’ve got my Bible, supplemental commentary materials and note taking tools (pencil, pens, highlighters and sticky notes). Obviously, yeah, it’s getting pretty serious.

Sunday evening I was digging into my Revelation reading for the second time that day. I read through the very first 10 verses of chapter one and there I was on the next 10 when I got to verse 13.

>>>including excerpt of verses 12-16<<<

Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands, one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe, and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. his eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

Revelation 1:12-16

This figure like a son of man is Jesus, wearing a long robe and a golden sash around his chest.

In the first century, wearing a sash across the chest would signify leadership and authority. Sooooo how fitting it would be for our Savior Jesus to be sporting such a thing.

Then it got me thinking though…

If Jesus were to appear today, would we immediately know this? I mean, without reading the scriptures and studying, I guess we wouldn’t have done our part to begin with. But, in America, I mean… most of us don’t dress like they did back then. We’re not all that symbolic with our clothing choices, but again, maybe that’s a me thing. 👀

How would we point out authority figures today?

Other than someone’s title, like a CEO, people in authority positions usually give off some authoritative vibe. Perhaps they conduct themselves in a certain way, with a certain air of confidence and stability. They’re calm and steady. They’re assertive.

If Jesus comes back tomorrow, is how he dresses important to us knowing Him as Who He is? Is it going to matter? Is how He comes back going to look different for us in modern day time compared to the first century writings?

I don’t have an answer since I don’t know and it hasn’t happened yet. This is all just ramblings from my inner thought process.

  1. Interesting thoughts. 🤔 And perhaps those of us who are Christians would know Him thanks to the Holy Spirit living inside of us. 🙌🤍

That’s true and that’s what I would think – when we don’t know, I assume we’d be led by the Holy Spirit. Thanks for sharing!! ☺️
