Culturally Relevant

The question

Paul found a way to describe Jesus in a “culturally relevant” way – how is Jesus relevant or irrelevant in today’s culture? Referenced in Acts 17:16-33.

The answer

Paul took the culture and brought the Biblical significance to the people, explaining who Jesus is to these Gentiles who have no knowledge of the Old Testament.

Jesus is relevant in today’s culture because He is simply always relevant – every part of our lives have been touched and breathed into by Him.

The crux of the matter is that He is made out to be irrelevant in so many areas that are important to the Christian life. He’s pushed out of lives for the sake of cultural ideas instead of being met there to turn the people’s hearts. He’s used as a bargaining tool to reach the culture, but not changing lives. He’s pushed out of lives for the sake of a false, imitation Gospel where culture rules the church over Christ Himself.

There’s a line in meeting people where they are to get them out of there and bending the Gospel for the sake of meeting people where they are. One will lead to further despair because it leads them to a false hope that’s built on the belief that you can be who you are and where you are and still get to Heaven without the changing of the heart and renewing of your mind through true, loving obedience to the Father.

“But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

2 Timothy 2:19

“For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

1 Peter 2:6

“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established;”‬

Proverbs 24:3

“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:11

  1. Yes, Jesus is always relevant! People who are far from Him cannot see that. Some don’t want Him at all. And others only want what’s convenient for them and their lifestyle. Those who walk with Jesus can see how He is vital in any and every situation. Thanks for this, Summer. I enjoyed it.
