In the Windy Times

In Oklahoma this past week, we’ve had a lot of wind. It’s not unusual for us to have wind, it’s windy most days. The powerful wind reached over 60mph though, which was greater than it has gotten in a very long time. This came with other challenges like fire danger, uprooted trees and semis being blown off the highway when they’re traveling at high speeds. These are things we saw on Friday. It’s been a crazy time!

Sunday afternoon, in the nice weather, other than the wind, I decided to do some reading on the front porch. Sitting under the covered porch and facing north, protected from the wind by the house, it was actually peaceful. I was able to hear the roar of the wind that blows west to east and the rustling of the trees all around us.

It reminded me of that basic example of how God works. With the wind, we hear the effects of it through the trees, the leaves falling or the disastrous impacts when trees falls, sparks spread and start a raging fire, but we never see the wind itself. God works the same way – we don’t see Him, but we know He’s there.

Not every day is windy. Not every day you’ll see the effects of God working. Other days there’s just this slight breeze, maybe clouds rolling in slowly. Those represent the quiet work of God. He’s not always roaring, loud with His plans or work.

Early in Jonah, we read that God used a great wind to rise the sea up into a vicious storm when Jonah fled from His call from God.

But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.

Jonah 1:4

Aren’t there times when wind is a good thing? Yes, can’t do much with a kite for example on a calm day. I don’t know if a wind turbine would be much good if there’s no wind either.

God works in those windy times. His plans are working, it’s in full swing. The clouds are coming, but He brings victory over the storms. We can rest in the wind!

No wind is calming and helps when you need stuff to not blow away, but it can also mean the calm before a storm.

If you’re not experiencing wind, I hope you do soon! Embrace the breeze and let the wind be a reminder of all God has provided, His sovereignty, and how Jesus brings victory – Resurrection Sunday is so soon!!

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
