Summer’s Job

Do you enjoy your job?

This was a writing prompt a few days ago. I figured I’d check out these prompts that WordPress has in the main page of the app. Why notttt. I’ve been wanting to blog, but unable to get back into the spirit of it. Here we go.

Short answer yes, I do enjoy my job!

You didn’t come here for a short answer though, did you?

My job, for those who don’t know, is being an accounts payable supervisor. I do a little bit of everything in accounts payable and I supervise, basically.

I’m second in command in our department with 6 people currently reporting directly to me. Being a people leader is something I never wanted to do. Being in management? Nope. Never wanted. Wanting to move up in my career? Sure.

Taking that step of applying and interviewing for this promotion a few years ago was huge for me. Other people may not realize that or think that’s such a big deal, but for me, I needed encouragement from people and to believe in myself that I could do this hard thing in order to advance my career.

Even though I’ve never wanted to be a people leader, particularly manage people and have to handle issues that arise or do the hiring process for instance, it’s been really rewarding and I’ve been able to carve out my own style. I don’t know what kind of manager my direct reports think I am, but I guess they think I’m okay. 😂 I try to be that encouragement for them because there’s a lot to remember and a lot to learn – I know because I myself am still learning! – and with all we have to deal with, it can be easy to feel discouraged or feel like you’re making mistakes or there’s a huge workload. I also try to be available, whether that’s answering a quick message or hopping on a call to answer questions, train or review, see where there needs to be improvement or where those struggle areas are. At the end of the day, we’re a team and if I’m not there for my people, who will be? If someone’s falling behind, it ultimately brings the whole team down because others are picking up the slack. That’s important to me – that everyone does their part and understands their role. That’s become more apparent after I became supervisor and was overseeing these other roles that I used to be in.

Now I kind of enjoy being the people leader, most of the time, when I can be those things for my team. Sometimes I feel pretty lousy, but mostly, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and what I’ve been able to accomplish in my role.

On a daily basis, I’m reviewing reports for our department, reaching out to suppliers, talking to people, talking to our field offices and collaborating with my team on the invoice process. Because accounts payable is pretty much all I’ve ever done in my hands on accounting experience, it’s what I enjoy and I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I have great relationships with other companies and I think that helps – being able to work with people within my company but also able to work with those outside my organization easily to resolve issues is beneficial.

My job takes a lot of my time and energy through the day. I’m very busy the whole day. The work never stops and doesn’t slow down. As I said though, I truly enjoy what I do and it’s not so bad. I do look forward to some of my vacation times when I actually plan those, lol.

Work willingly at whatever you do as if you were working for the Lord and not for man.
