Bird Watcher or Seed Spreader?

There’s a difference between standing by and watching birds spread the seeds around and being the bird that spreads the seeds. The seed? The Gospel. The birds? Disciples making disciples.

I’m not sure where I got the idea for this blog post and I literally just made a note for it a couple of hours ago – if you didn’t think I had memory problems before, you do now. 🙂

So birds are probably annoying, right? They poop on everything – concrete, grass, trees, chairs, cars etc. You can be driving down the road or expressway and get nailed by some far from appealing stuff right in the windshield. They can also chirp your ear off (figuratively) and some birds are probably really aggressive, ya never know what you’re walking by, my friends.

On the upside, birds spread things like seeds (and diseases, let’s be honest… but this is a positive paragraph!) and seeds grow TREES and stuff – God’s creation. I’m not making this up. Have you ever had an unexpected tree start growing in your garden or in your yard? You can probably blame or praise a bird, but this event could also be attributed to squirrels who like to hide things. It’s a toss up, folks… BUT WE’RE GOING WITH BIRDS FOR THE SAKE OF THE ANALOGY.

Birds are like disciples. How?

1) Birds gather together. Sometimes you see one, but most days, there’s at least two. Some days, you probably see them by the tens or hundreds on power lines clustered together. What do they do up there anyway? I couldn’t be a bird. But anyway… Matthew 18:20

For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.

Matthew 18:20

2) Birds spread stuff – like seeds! For us, this seed is the Gospel. The Good News. Matthew 28:19

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19

Are we going to be bird watchers? Those that watch other disciples, but we ourselves don’t get involved with God’s plan? If we do not actively talk and share the Gospel, we’re just watching other people do what we were called to do from the beginning of time.

Seed spreaders are fruitful and continually spread seeds around the community. Some seeds don’t always grow, but as long as there’s a seed, spread that seed! Share the wonderful news.

For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of God.

Habakkuk 2:14

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

John 15:4
I just love this song so much. We are living for God – we are living to let the world know Jesus not ourselves.
