The Right Tools for the Job

Have you ever made a meal and then asked yourself if you should use a fork or a spoon to eat it with? That happens to me a lot for some reason. Am I the only one? It’s never obvious to me. Like a burger – at most you need a knife. How many people do you know eating a burger with a spoon or fork?

What prompted this post, you might be asking?

Well, I actually seen someone in my neighborhood raking the snow.

I don’t know about you, but using a rake doesn’t seem like it would be a productive tool to use regarding snow removal. I’m unaware of how his job went, but we can imagine.

In his defense, maybe that’s all he had. I hope a neighbor came down the road and helped a brother out and offered the correct tool for the job.

It got me thinking about the tools we have in life. In our Christian life particularly, we’re given the direct Word of God. Jesus’ own words were recorded for us. There’s no mistaking what His commands and purposes are for us when they’re in written form for us.

So many times, we feel unequipped for life’s challenges, at least I do. We have the toolbelt He gave us. We have the armor of God. We just need to crack it open and put it on.

There’s a lot of self-help books out there. Sometimes these are useful, especially if they’re Christ-centered, faith-focused and help us re-align with Him rather than some secular ideology. I wouldn’t knock those, necessarily, but we as Christians should also be mindful of the real self-help book that’s the most important book that we can dig into. It provides lifelong learning because no matter how much we study and learn from it, there’s still more to unfold for us as time goes on and we grow. That’s part of why it’s called the living Word. It’s alive. He’s alive.

All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

If you’re feeling unequipped or unsure of what tool to turn to this week, I’d like to encourage you today to break open the Bible and you just might find your answer and more revealed to you.

He doesn’t call the equipped, but rather, He equips the called.

Don’t be raking snow either, in case you thought about it today. 🙂

  2. Thanks for this reminder- often I pick up the right tool but still use it wrong but God will direct me to turn the shovel right side up! The living word is always active and for thick people like me always correcting my “grip on the handle”
