Beyond Ordinary

In my Systematic Theology reading, the current chapter I’m on is God’s Providence. All aspects of our lives are breathed out by His own doing. Whether it’s the breath in our lungs or the circumstances that bring about change in us.

We pray every Sunday at church the Lord’s Prayer (see Matthew 6) and in it we ask God to give us this day our daily bread, asking Him to provide. Most of us have jobs or maybe even grow some of our own food. These are the means in which we eat, but how? God provides. He’s continuously bringing things to fruition. What we do, He provides.

What struck me is that in the study it reads, “Paul, looking at events with the eye of faith, affirms that ‘my God will supply every need’ of his children (Phil. 4:19), even though God may use ‘ordinary’ means (such as other people) to do so.”

Sometimes it’s the little things in life that amazes us. God uses ordinary means to provide in extraordinary ways.

I always think the word extraordinary is funny, because ordinary alone, is not much. it’s plain and simple, really. Extra ordinary would just be kind of boring. Putting the two words together to make extraordinary means it’s beyond ordinary.

God doesn’t provide ordinarily. He provides in abundance. He is and provides in extraordinary ways.

How has God provided for you this past week?

His providence put you where you are today. How can you be used by God in an ordinary way to bring about extraordinary glory for Him?

For his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?”

Daniel 4:34-35

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:16

All of God’s creation and provisions are extraordinary. There would be no food, no life, without God.
