We’re now near the end of October, and I’ve constantly been thinking about my novels that I have started even though I haven’t been great at doing the writing consistently. With it getting into November in just a couple days, that means NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). The characters and scenes play in my head a lot and it never hits me at a convenient time for me to type in my phone or write down.
With all that thinking going on, I hadn’t been totally satisfied with the name of the fictional town. It was dumb and I think meant initially as a filler for a more permanent name later, but then it stayed that way for so long I thought that’s what I was going with.
One day I started thinking about what can I seriously name this town?? I want to nail down details and I want everything to be set in stone. Wouldn’t that make my writing life easier? Probably not, because everything is so hard, LOL.
Anyway, I was thinking, Googling and gathering ideas. I wanted something that had a good ring to it but also alluded to Biblical terminology. I came to the decision of “Remnant Ridge.”
I haven’t nailed down all I want to in my stories or this town, but the town name is done and I’m not changing it again!
Remnant means “small remaining quantity of something” according to Google search. In my study Bible’s glossary, it defines remnant as the below.
“In the Bible, a portion of people who remain after most others are destroyed by some catastrophe. The notion of a “remnant” can be found in various events recorded in Scripture, including the flood (Genesis 6-8) and the return of exiled Judah (Ezra 9).”
Since I had remembered the term “remnant,” I’ve come across it a few more times in reading and listening to things. Like most recently this week, I was reading Isaiah 11:1-4 with a friend and later went back and read the whole chapter on my own. A remnant is mentioned not just once in the chapter, but twice later on.
“In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from coastlands of the sea.” – Isaiah 11:11
“And there will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that remains of his people, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.” – Isaiah 11:16
It’s cool how things like that jump out at you after you come across it or decide on something.
I was slightly inspired in this direction by the series I’ve been reading that’s based in this town called “Redemption Ridge” and while I didn’t want to borrow the “Ridge” part, I know it’s a fairly common town name so I threw it in and it worked with Remnant.
I’m excited to incorporate this theme into my stories and this town full of quirky characters. 🙂
What do you think?

I like the new name of the town. It does have a ring to it. Best wishes on NaNoWriMo!
